The Diamonds proudly sponsored by Impact Retail, MJB Motors, and CPS group travelled to runaway league leaders Whetstone hopeful of being able to cause a huge upset.
The game kicked off and the league leaders played the ball wide to the winger whose cross flicked off Lexi U and found its way into the bottom corner for the worst start possible. Smelling blood Whetstone pushed forward and things went from bad to worse just two minutes later when an almost carbon copy move saw the winger again cross the ball only this time to go in off the unfortunate Bethan.
You could have forgiven the diamonds if they didn't recover from these two early knockout blows, however they didn't and the midfield of Millie, Ellie O, and Lacey managed to put some good balls through and Amelia and Isla started to ask some questions of the whetstone defence which was at least in the opening stages keeping Whetstone honest and making them work.
Without the ball however the Diamonds were being pulled all over the park chasing shadows at times and Emily, Bethan, and Lexi U were just about managing to clear their lines and with Lexi B in goal busier than she had been in the previous 5 games pulling off a string of saves.
The Diamond's resistance was again broken on 13 minutes when the whetstone striker finished cooly following another good move. Ellie T Safia, Anna, Lilly B., and Lily S were brought on to try and shut down spaces and create counterattacks. This worked well with Amelia, Isla, and Lily S all having fantastic opportunities to get on the scoresheet.
HT3-0
The second half started and the Diamonds came out flying determined to win the second half, they were now filling spaces and intercepting passes higher up the field, driven on by Safia, Millie, and Lacey who were now being more aggressive in their pursuit of the ball.
A corner then saw Bethan pull the ball down and smash the ball goalwards only for a terrific block, next came a 30-yard thunderbolt from Millie that just skimmed the bar, then Lacey powered through the middle of the park and had her shot blocked... the Diamonds were now forcing the play.
When Whetstone did manage to get forward Bethan, Emily, and Lilly B were more than a match for their attacks and were winning and covering each other brilliantly. When Whetstone did get through they found Lexi B showing why she is one of the best keepers in the league and she made one super save beating a ball away from the top corner.
The diamonds were creating chance after chance but just couldn't find the end product.
FT 3-0
Despite the result, the Diamonds can be very proud of their performance today, they got punished for a slow start by a very good team but instead of folding they stood up and went toe to toe with them. The difference between the two teams today was composure in the final third and the girls will gain this the more they play. The biggest compliment I can give the girls is from the opposition manager who summed the game up as the toughest game they have played and for the first time this season they were lucky to win the game in the end.
