There are no easy fixtures in the U14 Yellow division but Oadby & Wigston wouldn't have been the team I'd have chosen to try and break our duck after two defeats to start the season. However, buoyed by a full squad, GreenTowers were well worth the draw. Overall, neither side was so dominant as to think they were robbed of the win.
The first half belonged to GreenTowers. Sydney was the first to get a meaningful shot on goal on 5 minutes - from the edge of the box, well saved by the keeper; a minute later Libby shot across the goal just wide. It was Evie N who broke the deadlock on 21 minutes; from just inside the area she hit a sublime shot into the top left corner - the keeper did well to get her finger-tips on it but could not prevent the goal.
From the resulting kick-off the O&W number 9 made an audacious attempt on goal (direct from the centre spot). Grace was not in position and was relieved to see the ball go just wide. At the time I thought 10 out of 10 for initiative and trying something different; alas this is obviously a tried and tested tactic as the same player did the same at the start of the second half (in spite of the fact that Grace was ready in goal alongside Evie N and Sylvia waiting for the shot).
Throughout the rest of the half, GreenTowers were the better team and created some half chances. Megan, Mollie, Sydney, Danielle and Evie S all had good runs but didn't quite have the poise to find the shot or last pass that was required. Ray was often at the heart of the good link up play. With player of the match Sylvia patrolling the defence and the excellent Grace in goal, O&W didn't really look dangerous. If anything we failed to use the full width of the pitch and we continue to leave too large a gap between midfield and defence.
The second half saw O&W come on more. Whilst they created more half chances, Grace still did not need to pull out many saves. Unfortunately one good shot from outside the box caught her a couple of yards off her line and it dropped just under the bar for the equaliser. The biggest mistake was the failure to close down the players in the run up to the goal.
GTH continued to hunt for the decisive second goal but, perhaps wisely, didn't gamble the house on doing so. O&W are quite streetwise and have some real pace up front so could have easily caught us on the counter-attack. A draw was probably a fair result.
Ant Littlejohns (GreenTowers coach): "Lots of fresh legs this week was so much better, so disappointing to concede a long range effort which could easily have been closed down. Work hard next week and we can get another positive outcome."
