GTFC Youth U13 played their first ever game Belton Villa Minikickers, on Sunday, the fixture being switched to Hinckley Academy due to the recent poor weather making Belton's pitch unplayable. GTFC went into the game with 12 players, Lewis and Max having not recovered from injuries sustained in the previous match against Sporting Loughborough a month prior. Dhru and Freddie came into the team with Sean returning to the bench. As the game had been switched, there was no referee appointed, for the second time in four matches.
Belton started the game kicking down the hill, and the game was initially an even affair, with Keerthan's pace causing problems for Belton's defence. Belton however started to have the more possession and as the half went on, started to dominate, forcing a number of corners. Zach and Harrison were having a battle with Belton's 12 and 23, whilst their big number 9 on the right hand side of Belton's midfield was proving a challenge for Dan and Harry.
Belton took the lead after 25 minutes, when a loose was picked up and worked to the left hand side of the box for a Belton attacker to score. Belton continued to press with Ted showing good handling in difficult conditions, whilst a couple of chances also went wide. GTFC were struggling to get into the game, shown by the fact that no corners were forced in the first half. The half time whistle was blown with Belton deserving their 1-0 lead.
With the advantage of the slope in the second half and with conditions worsening, GTFC kicked off the second half and were soon on the attack, forcing Belton to concede a corner. Leighton's outswinger found Jack on the edge of the box and his powerful shot forced the Belton keeper into a good save. The second half became a more even affair with chances at both ends and with 50 minutes gone, a GTFC throw in was worked across the pitch to the left hand side of the area, where Leighton collected the ball and hit a great shot across the keeper from a tight angle to find the far corner of the goal, bringing the scores level.
Belton continued to be a threat, with substitute number 7 looking very dangerous on the right wing, Dan making a couple of sliding tackles to stop him in his tracks, whilst a deflected Leighton shot brought out a great save from the Belton keeper. However with 15 minutes left, Belton scored what proved to be the winner, a run across the box was followed by a shot from the edge of the area which went over Ted and just under the bar to hit the back of the net.
GTFC continued to have chances, mainly on the break and with a minute left Keerthan was clear on goal, but the Belton keeper came out bravely to smother the chance and ensure the visitors went away with the win.
There were plenty of positives to take away from the game with the defence and Ted again showing resolve under pressure. It was good to see Fin back on his game, tackling well to win the ball in midfield and beating opposition players with some mazy runs, whilst Sean grew into the game and passed well from the CDM position in the second half.
Again, GTFC showed there was little between them and the teams at the top of the table, Belton finishing their Autumn campaign with 5 wins and 3 defeats. 1 point from games against GNG Tigers, Quorn Juniors, AFC Barwell and Belton could and probably should have been more. Plenty to work on, but also plenty of encouraging signs for the future too.
